The Gwalior gharana is accepted as the fountainhead of all gharanas of khayal. Originated in Gwalior, the gharana flourished under the munificent patronage of its musically inclined rulers. It had not only a glorious past but continues to thrive today.

The evening will commence with the presentation of audio recordings of one of the gems of Gwlior gharana, Krishnarao Shankar Pandit (1893-1989), from the NCPA archives. Recorded in 1971, the tracks include a brief on the gharana by the maestro followed by a bada khayal in raga Kedar and a tappa in raga Bhairavi. The supporting artistes on these tracks are Ram Narayan (sarangi) and Narayanrao Indorkar (tabla).

The docuementary film attempts to discover the unique facets and legendary vocalists of this hallowed tradition based on the knowledge and personal experiences of renowned artistes of the present-day.

There will be a Q-A session with the director of the documentary.
