The NCPA Fresh Pix Series was started to create an audience for regional and indie cinema that often does not reach the lay audience, outside of the film festival circuit.
Based on a true story, the film engages with the debates around surrogation. Mary, an American, comes to India in search of a surrogate mother in order to fulfill her dreams of rearing a child. Having chosen Yashoda, a poor woman, for this task, Mary is informed by doctors after five and a half months of pregnancy that the child could be born with a handicap. Shocked and shattered by this news, Mary refuses to accept such a child and goes back to America. Yashoda is thereby left to fight for the rights of the child she carried on behalf of Mary urging one to question the idea of motherhood and rights in light of surrogation.
‘Mala AaiVhhaychy!’ has won the National Award for best film and director (Marathi) with 32 national and international film awards so far.
