Indian Classical Music

This is a programme that makes available to lovers of Indian music some of the NCPA’s archival recordings.  This month, we present the immortal music of  D. V. Paluskar, the inimitable doyenne of Gwalior gharana.

Dattatreya Vishnu Paluskar (1921-1955) was the exceptionally talented son of the legendary Vishnu Digambar Paluskar. Having lost his father at a young age, he trained with his cousin Chintamanrao Paluskar, and his senior gurubhais, Narayanrao Vyas and Vinayakrao Patwardhan. He also had the benefit of receiving training from yet another stalwart, Mirashibuwa.

His impeccable voice, effortless yet systematic raga presentation, and a rich emotive quality of his music made Dattatreya the darling of millions. Unfortunately, death snatched this rising meteor from the musical firmament at the age of 34. Nevertheless, through the All India Radio and gramophone records this trail-blazing vocalist continues to inspire young musicians.

This session will be conducted by Sharad Sathe, the noted vocalist and the foremost disciple of  D. V. Paluskar.

In collaboration with the Indian Musicological Society.

Admission on a first-come-first-served basis.
