The NCPA Fresh Pix Series was started to create an audience for regional and indie cinema that often does not reach the lay audience, outside of the film festival circuit.
The movie is set in the backdrop of a town where rooster fights are common. Pettaikaaran and Rathnaswamy (a cop) are tough competitors in these games and it is often Pettai who wins because nobody knows his way of maintaining the quality of the birds. Karuppu, who works for Pettai, falls in love with an Anglo-Indian girl, Irene, who dislikes him. He manages to irk Pettai when he enters his pet rooster in the ultimate rooster fight challenge against Rathnaswamy.
The film has won six awards at the 58th National Film Awards including the awards for Best Director and Best Actor.
