Salvatore, orphaned young, is left with an old grandmother and little sister to take care of, besides tending to his father's tomato greenhouse. In doing so, his own education suffers. The school headmaster and teacher look for ways to make Salvatore come to school. The teacher invites himself to the boy's place every afternoon after school, offering to help with the greenhouse and fishing. As Salvatore is taught as he works, the teacher learns a lot too. But there is a social worker who is determined to send Salvatore and his sister to foster homes and his grandmother to an old age home. Will she succeed?
