The seminar will be inaugurated by the legendary santoor maestro, Shivkumar Sharma, and the keynote address will be delivered by Shekhar Sen, chairman, Sangeet Natak Akademi. Thumri is the principal genre of semi-classical music, also used in Kathak. Known for its highly ornamental idiom, it is capable of expressing a range of emotions. Thumri, dadra and allied folk melodies such as chaiti, kajri, barsati, jhoola, sawan etc. are commonly performed and are immensely popular with the audiences. This seminar will focus on the origin, history and sociocultural associations of these forms. Various styles, viz. poorab, Punjab and Lucknow, associated with thumri, will be discussed in detail with audio/video recordings of great exponents. There will also be a discussion about the role of instruments traditionally used for accompanying these forms. The speakers /panellists will include Arvind Parikh, Birju Maharaj, Shekhar Sen, Ajoy Chakraborty, Shruti Sadolikar, Malini Awasthi, Nayan Ghosh, Ajay Joglekar, Snehal Muzoomdar, Meena Banerjee and Manjari Sinha.
