An NCPA Presentation
Ismat Chughtai was a pioneering female Urdu writer of the 20th century whose works challenged patriarchal norms and structures. Partly autobiographical, shortly after Lihaaf was published, Chughtai was summoned to the Lahore Court for an obscenity trial. Lihaaf is alive with themes that are still relevant: female sexuality, closeted homosexuality and patriarchy to name a few.
