Bharatanatyam Lecture-demonstration
by Malavika Sarukkai

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Museum Society of Mumbai, the Society, in collaboration with the NCPA and with generous support from the K.V. Mariwala Philanthropy Initiative, has launched a new programme,  A Perspective – Drishtikon,  to promote the diverse classical dances of India through a series of engaging lecture demonstrations. The inaugural session of this initiative will be led by Malavika Sarukkai, a widely acclaimed Bharatanatyam exponent.

Malavika Sarukkai was trained in Bharatanatyam by Kalyanasundaram, S. K. Rajarathnam and Kalanidhi Narayanan and has been performing for more than five decades. She is also proficient in Odissi which she learnt from Kelucharan Mohapatra and Ramani Ranjan Jena. She has performed at major dance festivals in India and abroad. She is a recipient of senior fellowships and production grants from the Department of Culture, Government of India, for creating new work and extending the repertoire. She has choreographed and performed solo thematic productions. Sarukkai has received several awards, notably the Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Kalaimamani, Nrithya Choodamani (Sree Krishna Gana Sabha), the Mrinalini Sarabhai Award and the Raza Award for the Arts, among others.

The Museum Society of Mumbai was founded in 1963 to promote public interest in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya and cultivate in the public an appreciation for art and culture. Through the years, the society has been a highly respected and dynamic organisation. Its band of devoted volunteers assist in a variety of activities, which include holding lectures by scholars of renown, guided visits to significant historical and cultural sites and seminars and workshops on topics related to culture and history. The society also offers programmes suitably tailored for school and college students, those with disabilities, people from underprivileged backgrounds and others.
