Hindi Play
Renowned Russian writer Anton Chekhov’s works bear the hallmark of his deeply perceptive understanding of life. Four of his satirical short stories about exploitation were adapted by multi-hyphenate theatre personality Dinesh Thakur into his Hindi play Aapas Ki Baat.
The stories shed light on the many kinds of exploitation that occur in a divided society, especially when the line between the exploiter and the exploited begins to fade. The characters—a mistress who talks down to her maid; a man who woos the object of his desire through her own husband; a guy on the beach, attempting to sell his unique brand of entertainment at great risk to his life; a woman who enters a bank to extort money—pose the question: are we all being exploited while we are busy exploiting someone else?
