A verse play written by Dharamvir Bharati, Andha Yug is set against the backdrop of the last day of the Mahabharata war till the last moment of Krishna’s life. The play hints that every act of violence degrades society. Longing for one last act of revenge, Ashwatthama releases the ultimate weapon, the Brahmastra, which threatens to destroy the world. The moral centre of the play is Krishna. Despite his failure to ensure peace, it is his presence throughout the play that reveals to us that ethical and just ways are always available to human beings even in the worst of times. Andha Yug is an allegory to the violence that occurred during the partition of India and the Second World War and its effects on human lives and moral values. It depicts how when society turns away from introspection, both victor and loser suffer. It speaks about greed and self-centredness. It questions our accountability for the moral choices we make. It elaborates on the consequences of a society failing to stop the cycle of revenge and collectively rejecting the voice of wisdom.
