‘Asen me Nasen me’ delves deeply into the intricate dynamics of a difficult mother-daughter relationship amidst the backdrop of dementia and mortality. By focusing intimately on the personal truth, it lends itself to be universal. The play has strong women characters and has references of men who never come on stage but have a deep impact on the lives of these women.
The play explores the nuances of relationships in modern day city life in microscopic detail. Medicine has increased life expectancy but has also created a challenge to maintain the quality of human connection in nuclear families.
Deepa, 75, lives alone in Pune and her married daughter Gauri is living in Mumbai while her son Rohan is in the USA. This is a relatable situation in many households and can strike an instant connection with the audience. Deepa slowly starts losing her memory and Gauri must manage her illness as she goes through her own divorce. Both confront each other with the unresolved past which is slowly slipping from Deepa’s mind which creates further difficulty of finding a closure. Loneliness, a need for authentic human contact, ageing, family secrets, guilt and redemption are prominent themes in the play.
It challenges audiences to confront their own mortality and embrace the fleeting beauty of life’s moments. It invites audiences to ponder the complexities of human connection in an increasingly fragmented world. In an age where technology promises to connect us, “Asen me Nasen me” reminds us of the irreplaceable value of authentic human relationships and the profound impact they have on our lives.
