An NCPA Presentation
The Jaipur-Atrauli gharana of Hindustani music is known for its repertoire of varieties of ragas that are based on a single parent raga. Bilawal is one such raga. This presentation will highlight the characteristics of six varieties of Bilawal: Alhaiya, Kukubh, Devgiri, Yamani, Shukla and Sukhiya Bilawal.
Having trained with several maestros like Majid Khan, Mogubai Kurdikar and Kishori Amonkar, Dr. Arun Dravid is regarded as a veteran exponent of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. Besides the repertoire of uncommon ragas that are typical to his gharana, he is also adept in lighter forms such as thumri and Marathi natyasangeet.
Jui Dhaygude Pande has trained with stalwarts like Sharad Joshi, Sheela Joshi and is currently a disciple of Dr. Dravid. She is known for systematic exposition of the lesser-known ragas of the Jaipur-Atrauli tradition.
In this lec-dem, Dr. Dravid will give a brief introduction to each of the six varieties of Bilawal. This will be followed by Pande’s illustrations corresponding to each variety.
