Poetry listening has a long history and tradition in Gujarat, as is well known. Three poets – Saumya Joshi, Anil Chavda, and Bhavesh Bhatt —have become incredibly well-known thanks to this tradition. In addition to being a celebrated and successful theatre director, Saumya is well-known for his poetry and lyrics in the national award-winning movie Hellaro and the most well-known Coke studio song, Khalasi. In Choggo, he creates a novel approach to poetry presentation. He invites two poets with him to read poetry for this purpose; These poets are unique in that they are considered mahollas and street poets. Their language is the language of common people. Their subjects emerge from the surroundings.
This programme is sharpened and given shape by director Saumya, who presents it as a cohesive work rather than a conventional poetry presentation. Choggo is a unique event created by two well-known poets with Saumya acting as both a director and a poet.
In Gujarati slang, “Choggo” refers to a boundary in cricket. The goal of this show is to evoke the same rush that occurs when a boundary is hit on a cricket field.
