Western Music Festival & Piano Competition
An NCPA & Furtados Presentation

In 2010, Anthony Gomes and Parvesh Java decided to memorialise John Gomes and celebrate Robert Schumann’s bicentenary by creating the first Con Brio, called Schumania. Today we embark on the tenth edition of the festival and this time we are celebrating Clara Schumann’s bicentenary. We offer you More Schumania where we celebrate Clara by showcasing the work of women composers right from the 11th century till the 21st. Clara was the first woman to achieve equal status to her male counterparts, not only as a composer but also as a pianist, thereby paving the way for other women composers and instrumentalists.

(approx. 120 mins)
Thursday, 1st – 7.00 pm

Women composers had a natural propensity for song-writing and this concert showcases the exquisite compositional skill that they possessed in this genre. The composers on the programme include Clara Schumann (Six Songs Op. 13), Alma Mahler, Amy Marcy Beach, Amy Woodforde-Finden, Deirdre Gribbin, Eva Dell’Acqua, Ingeborg von Bronsart, Liza Lehmann, Muriel Herbert, Pauline Viardot and Rebecca Clarke sung by Ankna Arockiam, Farah Ghadiali, Jennifer Lee, Kersi Gazdar, Nitya Thomas, Oscar Castellino, Patricia Rozario and Rahul Bharadwaj. The concert will end with a chamber chorus singing Alice Parker’s Songstream accompanied by a piano duet with Mark Troop and Shirley Manuel.
