Dr. Puru Dadheech is not only a proficient Kathak dancer and choreographer but also an erudite scholar of the Natyashastra and treatises on nritya and is regarded the ‘father of the education system of Kathak’. He is a recipient of the Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Kalidas Samman. He has also been awarded the prestigious Tagore National Fellowship by the Ministry of Culture under its nodal agency Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. Dr. Dadheech is Director of the Sri Sri Center of Advanced Research in Kathak, Cuttack, India’s first dedicated centre for Kathak research. Mentored by luminaries like Durga Prasad, Narayan Prasad, Sunder Prasad and Shambhu Maharaj, Dr. Dadheech holds the Kathak Sangeetacharya degree for his thesis, “Kathak Nritya ka Udbhava aur Vikas”. With his efforts towards reviving traditional rachanas, or compositions, in uncommon talas and poems, and choreographies that blend the ancient with the modern, Dr. Dadheech is a stalwart of the elegant dance form.
During this three-day dance residency, participants will learn a dhrupad composition in Basant Ritu Dhrupad in Taal Shikha, a 17-matra tala, written by Dr. Dadheech.
