Dr. Narthaki Nataraj is a disciple of Tanjore K. P. Kittappa Pillai, who was a direct descendant of the Tanjore Quartet (four brothers considered to be the fathers of Bharatanatyam). She has specialised in the Tanjore-style Nayaki Bhava tradition. Her stoic courage and steadfast determination in the face of the societal hurdles she has faced as a trans woman have added to her expressive spiritual pursuit. Nataraj has performed at most leading festivals in India and abroad. She is a recipient of the Padma Shri from the Government of India, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and a Senior Fellowship from the Department of Culture, Government of India. She has the honour of having her life story featured, for the first time in India, in the textbook prescribed for the Standard. 11 syllabus in Tamil Nadu schools. She has founded the Velliyambalam School of Dance where along with her dance partner, Sakthi Bhaskar , she trains students from around the world in traditional repertoire as handed down to her by her guru.
