Indian music tradition is replete with varied genres, each having its idiom, character and aesthetics. Consequently, each genre demands special training, and musicians strive to master multiple genres and thus expand their repertoire.
Ajoy Chakrabarty has had the privilege of training with several mentors including legendary maestro Jnan Prakash Ghosh and Carnatic music virtuoso M. Balamurali Krishna. He has also trained with Munawar Ali Khan, son and disciple of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan of the Patiala gharana as well as stalwarts like Hirabai Badodekar, Latafat Hussain Khan, Uday Bhattacharya and others representing various genres. With an astounding command over classical, semi-classical and other genres such as khayal, Tarana, thumri, Nazrul-genetic, folk Songs, raga-based Bengali songs and Rabindra sangeet, he is acclaimed as an outstanding vocalist today.
Additionally, for the past four decades, Ajoy Chakrabarty has been actively engaged in imparting music training to several young artists including children at the ITC-SRA and Shrutinandan, Kolkata.
In this recital, individually, and along with his senior disciples, Brajeswar Mukherjee and Ayesha Mukherjee, Ajoy Chakrabarty will explore the musical landscape with several forms of Hindustani and Carnatic traditions: dhrupad, khayal, thumri, bhajan and tillana.
