by Apoorva Gokhale & Pallavi Joshi
The rainy season is richly celebrated in Indian music. Ragas of the Malhar family and myriad genres of semi-classical music like thumri and dadra are inseparably associated with this season. Several allied folk forms like kajri, sawan, jhoola, hindola also express the agony of separation and the ecstasy of union with the beloved during this season.
Apoorva Gokhale and Pallavi Joshi are the fifth generation of a family of musicians. They have trained in vocal music with their eminent grandfather, Gajananrao Joshi, and uncle, Madhukar Joshi, and also sought guidance from a host of other accomplished artistes representing the Gwalior, Agra and Jaipur-Atrauli gharanas, thus acquiring an in-depth understanding of various khayal traditions. The sisters are known for a systematic build-up of khayal with lyrical and evocative tonal expressions combined with an innate sense of rhythm, leading to a raga-specific aesthetic experience. With several awards and accolades to their credit, they carry forward the musical legacy of their forefathers.
In this recital, the duo will present a bouquet of classical and semi-classical compositions to celebrate monsoon.
