English Play
Hedda Gabler dramatises the experiences of Hedda, the daughter of a general, who is trapped in a marriage and a house that she does not want. The ennui of domestic life and constraints of social norms lead Hedda to seek power and control over those around her. The play reveals the destructive effects of repression, patriarchy and the lack of freedom afforded to women.
Hedda Gabler was written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen and had its premiere in 1891.
