P. L. Deshpande’s response to the probing, controversial and explosive play from the veteran playwright Vijay Tendulkar.
Sakharam Binder took head-on the moral custodians of the ’70s, provoking a ban and severe censorship. There were attempts to stop the shows and Tendulkar and director Kamlakar Sarang were targeted. Deshpande responded to the controversy in his style and wrote a play called Bhagwan Sri Sakharam Binder. While it appears to be a parody of Tendulkar’s Sakharam Binder, Pu La ridicules the hypocrisy of a moralistic society. The play was never presented onstage and Pu La’s humorous take therefore never reached the audience. A unique production of this play now is a comedy and family drama led by Suresh Jadhav, Sunil Jadhav and Mangesh Satpute.
