Marathi Play

An NCPA collaboration

A probing, controversial and explosive play from the veteran playwright Vijay Tendulkar. The play takes on the moral custodians of culture of the 70s. As expected, the play faced headwinds with a ban and the Censors went heavily against it. Playwright Tendulkar and Director Kamalakar Sarang were both targeted. There were attempts to stop the shows. Maharashtra’s favourite personality P. L. Deshpande responded to the controversy in his own style and wrote a play called Bhagwan Sri Sakharam Binder. While it appears to be a parody of the original play Sakharam Binder, P. L. ridicules the hypocrisy of moralistic society. The play remained untouched and upstaged till date. P. L.’s humorous take never reached the audience. P. L.’s solidarity with Tendulkar and the play is even more relevant today.
