Madama Butterfly is a tragedy about the love between Pinkerton, a United Stated Navy lieutenant living in Japan, and the geisha Cio-Cio San. Cio-Cio-San, who is also known as Madama Butterfly, is in love with Pinkerton and is ready to marry him. Though Pinkerton is infatuated with Madama Butterfy, he has to return to the United States for three years on duty. Butterfly sends word to Pinkerton that she gave birth to their son after he left Japan. She waits for her love to return, only to find out that Pinkerton has since married a woman named Kate with whom he would like to raise his son. Devastated at losing Pinkerton and her son, Madama Butterfly kills herself.
