Mary, Queen of Scots, has fled from her subjects and has been imprisoned in Fotheringay Castle by her cousin, Elizabeth, Queen of England. At the heart of this opera is the fictional encounter between the two Queens, a dramatically effective falsification of history, replete with vocal fireworks. The volatility of this meeting leads Elizabeth to sign Mary’s death warrant.
