Masterclass by Priti Patel
The Sword and the Flute
Decoding the dynamic and sublime dance traditions of Manipur

Priti Patel is a renowned Manipuri dancer, teacher, and researcher, celebrated for her commitment to preserving and promoting the rich traditions of Manipuri dance. Her artistic journey began at an early age under the tutelage of legendary Manipuri gurus—Late Guru Bipin Singh and the Jhaveri Sisters. Under the rigorous guidance of Smt. Darshana Jhaveri and Smt. Kalavati Devi, she developed a deep mastery of the Vaishnavite Ras Leela tradition. Patel also received in-depth training in Thang-ta and Lai Haraoba from Padmashri Ojha Babu Singh and Ojha Thoranisabi Devi. A Fulbright Fellow, she is the founder of Anjika – Centre for Manipuri Dance and Movement Therapy. Her accolades include the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Uday Shankar Dance Award, and the DEVI Award (2024), among others.

In the masterclass titled The Sword and the Flute – Decoding the Dynamic and Sublime Dance Traditions of Manipur, Priti Patel will delve into the techniques and nuances of Manipuri dance, highlighting both its dynamic energy and ethereal grace. The session will offer insights into forms that are rarely seen outside Manipur and will also explore how Manipuri steps are incorporated into other dance styles, such as Rabindra Nritya.
