Event Details

NCPA is hosting a masterclass by the legendary Ratikant Mohapatra. Known for his deep knowledge and powerful style, he will guide students through the finer aspects of Odissi, helping them strengthen their technique and connect more deeply with the art form.
पल्लवी–ताल–वितानम् /  Pallavī-tāla-vitānam
पल्लवी–ताल–वितानम् is a refined exploration of rhythm and melody in Odissi dance, where intricate footwork and graceful movements weave seamlessly into the musical framework. The composition draws upon the rich grammar of Odissi to unfold a lyrical narrative through pure dance. In this presentation, special focus is given to analysing and discussing the tāla structure used in the Pallavi Shudah Dhaivat Bibhas, highlighting its rhythmic intricacies, tempo variations, and compositional beauty. This study offers insight into how rhythm shapes expression, elevating Pallavi into an artistic dialogue between music and movement.

Guru Ratikant Mohapatra, one of India’s foremost Odissi dance exponents and choreographers, is celebrated for his innovative works that honour tradition while embracing contemporary aesthetics. Over four decades, he has significantly advanced the global profile of Odissi through performances, pedagogy, and institution-building. As Director of SRJAN and Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Communication, and Indic Studies at Sri Sri University, he has mentored generations of artistes, fostering excellence and creative vision. Recipient of honours including the Central and Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards, he holds a Guinness World Record for choreographing 555 dancers in a single Odissi composition, embodying an enduring commitment to the art’s preservation, evolution, and universal appeal.
