The semi-classical genre of thumri (lit. thumkana – to walk with the dancing gait) is also closely associated with Kathak dance and evocative love poetry. Thematic content of thumri is, expression of love in myriad manifestations ranging from devotion, romance, separation, longing, jealousy and union, to erotic mood. Ajoy Chakrabarty is a torchbearer of Patiala gharana. With an astounding control over voice and command over diverse genres such as khayal, thumri, Rabindra sangeet and light music, today, he is acclaimed as an outstanding vocalist and  a respected guru. Birju Maharaj is a living legend amongst us. As the Head of Kalka Bindadin gharana of Lucknow, he has rendered yeoman’s service to Kathak with his masterful technique, choreography and extraordinary artistry of portraying bhav (emotions) through abhinaya. For the first time ever in Mumbai, the maestros will come together to explore the world of thumri through voice and dance movements. While Chakrabarty will render thumri compositions in Patiala style, Maharaj will portray emotions depicted in the compositions through abhinaya (interpretation and depiction through gestures and facial expressions).
