Singin’ in the Rain (1952)
Film Screening

An NCPA and Jonetsu Entertainment presentation, under license from Warner Bros.

Singin’ in the Rain is a classic Hollywood musical set during the late 1920s, capturing the film industry’s turbulent shift from silent movies to sound.

Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor star in one of the greatest musicals ever filmed. Musician Don Lockwood (Kelly) rises to stardom during Hollywood’s silent-movie era, paired with the beautiful, but jealous and foolish Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen).

When Lockwood falls for young studio singer Kathy Selden (Reynolds), Lamont has her fired. With the arrival of talking pictures, audiences laugh at Lamont’s voice, leading the studio to use Selden to dub for her.

The film’s iconic song-and-dance numbers celebrate the birth of movie musicals. It is known for its unforgettable performances—Kelly’s iconic rain-soaked dance, O’Connor’s energetic ‘Make ’Em Laugh’ and Reynolds’s spirited charm. Together, they bring humour, romance and dazzling choreography to a story that cleverly satirises Hollywood’s transformation, making it an enduring masterpiece.
