An NCPA Presentation in collaboration with Kali Billi Productions

Lavanyavati is a performance devised in collaboration with Lavani and Tamasha artists. In this performance we follow the journey/story of Lavani through the years. Lavani being part of Maharashtra’s folk tradition has evolvedĀ over the times with changes in social, political and cultural developments as well as changing audience preferences. It has not just survived but thrived through these changingĀ times and has become a part of the contemporary culturalĀ identity. Starting from the traditional form of Tamasha and Sangeet Bari performed mainly in rural areas and smaller towns ofĀ Maharashtra it has also reached the audiences in metro cities like Mumbai.

Exploring the meaning of Lavanyavati (the one who performs lavani) we start our journey from early 1800 till today. InĀ this performance weĀ are looking at Lavani and Lavanyavati through theĀ lense of Legacy, gender, and modern feminism.

The performanceĀ is devised in the form of documentaryĀ theatre. Along with live performances of Lavani songs we share stories (oral history), archival material like family photographs, video interviews and contemporaryĀ works like our collaboration with Agents of Ishq and Paromita Vohra.
