With a history of around 250 years, the tabla is the most widely used percussion instrument in the north Indian (Hindustani) tradition today. Besides solo performance, the instrument is used to provide rhythmic accompaniment to vocal and instrumental music, and dance. Among the genres of vocal music, tabla is inseparably associated with khayal, thumri, dadra and allied forms. Each of these forms has a distinct aesthetic and therefore demands a specific approach for accompaniment.

Acclaimed as a soloist and a versatile accompanist, Aneesh Pradhan is a disciple of the illustrious tabla maestro Nikhil Ghosh from whom he inherited a rich repertoire of traditional solo compositions. A recipient of several prestigious awards, he performs, teaches and has recorded for numerous domestic and international record labels. He also composes music for film, theatre and dance projects. Holding a doctoral degree in history, his study and research in the areas of history, music education, performance and patronage has led to several significant international publications.

This interactive workshop will focus on the art of accompaniment with emphasis on providing tabla accompaniment to various forms of Hindustani vocal music including thumri, dadra and other allied forms like chaiti, jhoola, etc., that are presented in concert.

This 60-minute workshop will be followed by a Q&A session.
