A talented young vocalist of dhrupad of the Dagar bani and an accomplished vocalist of ‘charpat ki gayaki’ of the Banaras gharana, Ashish Kumar Jaiswal is a shishya of Ritwik Sanyal under the ‘NCPA Citi Support to Gurus Tradition’ programme. Born in Varanasi, Jaiswal first trained with Narayan Das Chakraborty, a well-known musician of the Senia gharana and later with Anup Mishra, a noted vocalist of the Banaras gharana. Having established himself as a khayal vocalist, Jaiswal then trained in dhrupad from Sanyal in the guru-shishya parampara. He is a graded artiste of All India Radio, has performed at various concerts and festivals all over India and has been a recipient of several scholarships and fellowships. Jaiswal has a master’s degree in music from Banaras Hindu University and completed research on the aesthetics of padas in Hindustani classical music for a doctoral degree.
Sawani Shikhare had her initial training from Manjusha Patil, a noted vocalist of the Gwalior gharana. Since 2017, she has been a shishya of Ulhas Kashalkar under the ‘NCPA Citi Support to Gurus Tradition’ programme. Shikhare, who started her musical journey at the age of 10, has since performed several musical forms, including abhangas, natyasangeet, bhavgeet and bhajans. She has completed her master’s in music from Bharati Vidyapeeth in Pune, Maharashtra.
