An NCPA Presentation

Supported by Citi

Prominent among the various initiatives undertaken by Citi and NCPA are two programmes: Support to Guru-Shishya Tradition Scholarships to Young Musicians. The NCPA Citi Promising Artistes Series has been launched to offer a performance opportunity to the beneficiaries of these programmes.

Bhargav Rao (Bansuri)
Bengaluru-based flute player Bhargav Rao has been learning the instrument under the guidance of Gourish Yaji for seven years in the Gurukul tradition. He is also the shishya of Nityanand Haldipur under the ‘NCPA Citi Support to Guru Shishya Tradition’ programme.

Rao received the national scholarship in Hindustani classical music (instrumental) awarded by the Ministry of Culture in 2013 and has performed at several venues and festivals, including the NCPA, Gayan Samaj Deval Club in Kolhapur and Girnar Festival.

Dhaivat Mehta (Tabla)
It was Dhaivat Mehta’s uncle, Harshesh Mehta, who not only taught him the tabla but also took him to Dr. Aneesh Pradhan, a renowned tabla player, when he showed interest in the instrument. Mehta has been learning the instrument under Pradhan’s supervision for 19 years now. He is also the shishya of Pradhan under the ‘NCPA Citi Support to Guru-Shishya Tradition’ programme.

Over the course of his career, Mehta has accompanied and collaborated musicians such as Shubha Mugdal, Sudhir Nayak, Ashok Nadgir, Padma Wadkar, Bobby Singh, Igor Iwanek, among others and also participated in festivals like Serendipity Arts Festival, Banganga Sangeet Mahotsav, Sharda Sangeet Mahotsav and more.

He completed his postgraduate degree in tabla from Raja Mansingh Tomar University in Gwalior and his Ph.D. from The Maharaja Sayairao University in Vadodara.
