Understanding Performance Spaces: An Insight into Architectural Acoustics for the Performing Artistes
A free online workshop by Rolins Thomas Roy
An NCPA Presentation
Supported by HSBC India
The acoustic quality of any musical activity is invariably affected by the quality of the surrounding spaces, whether indoor or outdoor. It is therefore important to understand the behaviour of sound in a given space.
A practising architect with a specialisation in acoustics, Rolins Thomas Roy has been an acoustic and design consultant for a wide range of key projects worldwide, involving studios, private theatres, live music and performance spaces. Apart from these, his team has been consulting for projects like nature resorts, audio research facilities, institutions in educational and spiritual sectors, sports venues, etc. The team is also involved in imparting this information through technical seminars and lectures to students of architecture and the public works department.
The session will specially deal with the importance of spatial acoustics from a performer’s point of view. It will offer a brief overview of the stages involved in performance spaces and the stringent spatial parameters that are crucial to the type of music or performance and how it impacts the user. The presentation will include case scenarios of select spaces with an elaborate sequence of images from design stages to completion. Furthermore, it will focus on other factors that play an important role in defining the acoustic design criteria of a performance venue.
