A Bharatanatyam artiste of exceptional ability, Priyadarsini Govind has perfected a dance style marked by fluid movement and a sharp sense of rhythm. Among other appearances, she has performed at dance festivals around the world in countries like France, Tunisia, Britain and Japan. Govind has received several honours for her work including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Bharatanatyam.

‘Hasati’

‘Hasati’ will focus on humour and its different shades in Indian poetry through Bharatanatyam.

The programme  will begin with a traditional invocation along with a short description of the definition of humour in the classical texts.

The main piece is strung together portraying humour in different regional languages.

A  pure abhinaya piece will showcase the hasya rasa as portrayed by a nAyika. The story that she is choreographing is one where a nayika goes to Krishna, upset that he is not giving her enough attention. She states that she is like a “pearl necklace on a monkey’s neck”, indicating that the lord is unable to appreciate her. The verse she uses is a classical verse by 14^th century Sanskrit poet Vidyapati.

The focus of the presentation is not only to show humour in its myriad forms, but also the way it is treated in different Indian languages.

Kathakali by Sadanam Balakrishnan

Sadanam Balakrishnan was trained by renowned gurus Ramunni Nair and K. Kumaran Nair. He has specialised in the Kalluvazhi style, besides studying other styles of Kathakali. Balakrishnan has excelled both in performance and teaching of Kathakali. He has performed extensively travelling to over 25 countries, trained and guided several artistes, scripted and directed several new plays. He has received the Parishad Samman of Sahitya Kala Parishad, Delhi and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Kathakali.

Ravana did rigorous and painful penance to Lord Brahma for thousands of years and obtained boons to conquer the three worlds. He is invincible and only mere human being can defeat him.

Proud Ravana approaches his brothers to know what boons they have obtained. Kumbhakarnawho wishes to get the boon to destroy the all celestial beings (Devas) by slip of tongue instead of nirdevathvam he asked for nidravathvam (to sleep always) and he got that. His youngest brother Vibheeshana want to become an ardent devotee of Vishnu and he got that.

This reply made Ravana to laugh at them, he makes fun of them and ridicules them. Here the Hasya can have all the six variations, from Smita the gentle smile to Hasita, Vikasita, Avahasita, Atihasita and Apahasita), which gradually increases to its uncontrolled climax.
