The Game of Dice – Chhau by Santosh Nair & Troupe
and
Bahurang – Kathak by Nirupama & Rajendra & Abhinava Dance Company
An NCPA Presentation
Santosh Nair’s journey as a dancer began with Kathakali under the tutelage of his father Kalamandalam Padmanabhan and Sadanam Balakrishnan. He then trained in modern dance with Narendra Sharma of Bhoomika Creative Dance Centre and in the traditional dance of Odisha, Mayurbhanj Chhau, under Janmejoy Sai Babu. Trained both as a traditional and contemporary dancer, Nair has proved his excellence in the field by creating a style of his own. In 1998, he set up Sadhya, which has established itself as one of the leading contemporary dance companies of India.
The Game of Dice is a dance production in which the artistry is vibrant and exposes the audience to a new style. The production draws from Kathakali (with its rigorous and dramatic style of presentation), Mayurbhanj Chhau (with its high energy and control), martial arts and contemporary dance (with their creativity and experimentation). The elements are brought together through the medium of an episode from the Mahabharata, incorporating breadth of vision, a riveting plot, compelling dramatic structure, complex but real characters and wisdom, relevant even today.
Nirupama Rajendra and T. D. Rajendra have been working, for over 34 years, as dancers, choreographers, producers, performers, teachers and directors. They have carved a niche for themselves in the world of classical dance for their versatile and creative choreography which won them the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. As founders and artistic directors of Abhinava Dance Company, they have created over 200 original works and toured extensively around the world.
Bahurang celebrates creativity, opening with a blaze of colours, highlighting the beauty and glory of Indian culture, art and philosophy through exquisitely choreographed, thematically innovative sequences. These are performed to a richly orchestrated original music score. The presentation will also include Laya Lasya, Rasalila and NSA (No Strings Attached), a creative choreography that brings together nuances of the Carnatic violin and Kathak.
