Umang is a platform for promising artistes. This month, we present two popular folk-art forms – Yakshagana from Karnataka by Ankita Naik and Lavani from Maharashtra by Bhushan Korgaonkar. The performances will also throw light on the importance of diversity and inclusion in the field of dance.

Ankita Naik has been learning Yakshagana under the guidance of Guru Gopal Ganiga Heranjalu and has also trained in Bharatanatyam under the able guidance of Guru Smt. Chaya Khanvate. She has been the recipient of the Sharadha Sangeetha, Kerala Kala Samithi, and Vidwan Vadivelu Pillai Achievement awards among others as well as a CCRT Government Scholarship in the field of Bharatanatyam. Ankita has performed across India in prestigious festivals as well as temples in South India.

Bhushan Korgaonkar has been engaging with Lavani artistes since 2002, which led him to write his award-winning book and create the much-acclaimed show – Sangeet Bari. He has designed and curated shows and written Lavani and other songs for music videos produced by ‘Agents of Ishq’ and ‘Humsafar Trust’. He has recently translated a book from Marathi into English titled ‘Dalit Kitchens of Marathwada’. He has founded – B Spot Productions – to create performances that enable communities to share their stories, facilitate the audience to explore sensory pleasures and initiate conversations on taboo topics.

Lavani has been a vibrant dance form of Maharashtra for centuries. It has an inherent queerness in its content and form. Traditionally, both women and men dressed as women perform Lavani. The form is famous not only for its bold lyrics and catchy beats but also for its ability to break barriers of caste, class, age, language, gender, and sexuality. “Rang Birangi Lavani” aims to explore and celebrate this queerness by weaving dynamic stories with interactive performances.
