Presenting compositions of Shambhunath Mishra & Shyamcharan Mishra of Benaras gharana
This event was staged at the Tata Theatre on July 8, 2012 as a grand finale of NCPA’s 3-day annual festival titled Bandish: Celebrating the Legendary Composers.
In the world of Hindustani music, the contribution made by the Benaras gharana is noteworthy; not only in the domain of vocal (khayal & thumri) music, but also in the field of dance and tabla.
Trained by maestros Sarju Prasad Mishra and Srichand Mishra, Girija Devi (1929-2017) was one of the most celebrated female vocalists of our times. A versatile prima donna of the Benaras gharana, she had a wide repertoire ranging from khayal to Purab ang thumri and other allied semi-classical forms. Her inimitable style aesthetically combined the classical idiom with the regional flavour of folk songs from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
In this concert, Girija Devi brings to life some rare compositions: khayal, thumri, dadra and jhoola, composed by two legendary composers of Benaras gharana, Shambhunath Mishra (Nath Piya) and Shyamcharan Mishra (Shyamdas). She also presents a tappa composed by Shori Miyan.
