In India for the very first time, the NCPA Mumbai has the honour of hosting the 31st edition of the world’s foremost opera competition – Operalia.
Founded in 1993 by world renowned tenor Plácido Domingo, Operalia, one of the most respected musical events globally, has been instrumental in launching the careers of promising young opera singers. It has served as an annual platform in discovering all voice types from around the world, who are auditioned and heard by a distinguished international jury presided by Plácido Domingo.
Rolex presents the 2024 edition of Operalia at the NCPA. The competition’s semifinals will be carried out in an audition format on 17th September, while the competition’s finals on 21st September will be presented as a Gala Concert where the finalists will perform together with the Symphony Orchestra of India under the baton of Maestro Plácido Domingo and a guest conductor. This will culminate with the announcement of the 2024 winner.
The competition has played an impactful role on the international careers of past winners like Pretty Yende, Levy Sekgapane, Joyce DiDonato. Operalia winners, and now much- sought-after singers in the operatic world, Angel Blue, Maria Mudryak and Giordano Lucà have all performed at the NCPA to much acclaim.
