Tagore & The Hindi Film Song
An NCPA Library Presentation
Rabindranath Tagore prophesied, “Whatever fate may be in store in judgment of the future for my poems, stories and plays, I know for certain that the Bengali race must necessarily accept my songs: they must all sing my songs in every Bengali home, in the fields and by the rivers. I feel as if music wells up from within some unconscious depth of my mind, that is why it has [a] certain completeness.”
Little did the celebrated poet-composer know that his melodic inflections will travel across the borders of Bengal, into the cine-music of Bombay.
This guided music listening session conducted by Archisman Mozumder and Kushal Gopalka traces the origin and evolution of many a popular song like ‘Tere Mere Milan Ki Ye Raina’, ‘Bachpan Ke Din Bhula Na Dena’ and ‘Chhookar Mere Mann Ko’.
