Ratnakar Matkari’s ‘Bablya Rawalya’s Petara’, from his acclaimed collection of short stories, Kabandh, delves into the complex interplay of fear, superstition and social ostracism. The story, narrated through the protagonist Gopya’s childhood memories, paints a haunting picture of how blind faith and backward societal practices create a stifling atmosphere of silence. Gopya’s experiences reveal the emotional and psychological toll of superstition, leading him to the disturbing realisation that silence can be more dangerous than noise.
