Dramatised Reading in Marathi

An NCPA Library Presentation

Based on the award-winning book Sangeet Bari by Bhushan Korgaonkar, this edition of Page to Stage takes audiences into the vibrant yet little-understood world of Maharashtra’s traditional Lavani performers. Through the extraordinary life of veteran artiste Mohanabai Mahalangrekar, the narrative unfolds the realities, aspirations, relationships, struggles and triumphs of women belonging to matriarchal Lavani communities.

Far removed from the stereotypes often associated with Lavani artistes, Sangeet Bari presents deeply human stories of resilience, artistry, companionship and survival. Drawing upon the author’s decades-long engagement with the community, the work documents an age-old performance tradition that has shaped Maharashtra’s cultural landscape while continually adapting to changing times.

The reading will be presented by Mukta Barve, one of the most respected names in contemporary Marathi theatre and cinema. Known for her nuanced performances and strong stage presence, she brings depth and sensitivity to literary narratives.
