Ragas in Film Music
Lecture-demonstration by Amarendra Dhaneshwar
An NCPA Presentation
This lec-dem is organised to enable uninitiated listeners to enjoy and appreciate the rich raga legacy of Hindustani music by associating a particular raga with a corresponding raga-based film song. The song selection will include some evergreen compositions of celebrated Hindi film music directors who had a penchant for classical music as well as those immortalised by legendary playback singers. Amarendra Dhaneshwar has trained with Neela Bhagwat, a well-known exponent of the Gwalior gharana. Besides having to his credit a number of classical music concerts, he is also a freelance writer, contributing articles on Indian music to mainline dailies and periodicals. In this lec-dem, Dhaneshwar will explore the close connection between the raga-based art music and popular Hindi film music of the Golden era; using song clippings along with a live demonstration of the corresponding raga in classical style.
