Documentary Film Screening

An NCPA Presentation in collaboration with Cinema Collective

The Reality Check film series promotes documentary filmmakers in India whose work reflects life and culture in the country today in a provocative blend of creativity and integrity.

Call Me Dancer
English & Hindi Film (84 mins)

Manish is an athletic street dancer from Mumbai and the sole source of support for his working-class parents. Stepping unexpectedly into an inner-city dance school and encountering a 70-year-old Israeli ballet master ignites a hunger to become a professional dancer—even if the odds are stacked against him.

Call Me Dancer will take you on a magical journey—from the streets of Mumbai to the theatres of New York—through a story of perseverance, rebellion, passion, family ties and an unlikely friendship. It has won several honours, such as Best of Fest Documentary at the 2024 Palm Springs International Film Festival; Directing Award at the 2023 South Asian Film Festival of Cincinnati and Excellence in Documentary Directing Award at the 2023 New York Indian Film Festival 2023. Filmed in India, Israel, the UK and the US, it has music by popular singer-songwriter Jay Sean and award-winning hip-hop artiste-rapper Anik Khan, with a sublime score by Nainita Desai and Nina Humphreys.

Produced & directed by Leslie Shampaine
Co-director: Pip Gilmour

The film screening will be followed by a discussion.
