Faqeer Nimaana: Interpreting the Mystic Poetry of Shah Hussain
A Music and Dance Presentation by Sanjukta Wagh, Radhika Sood Nayak, Hitesh Dhutia & Vinayak Netke
(Approx. 60 mins)
Nimaanameans ego-less. Shah Hussain (1538-1599), the irreverent faqeerbelieved that grace and disgrace walk hand in hand. Heedless of societal norms, with “passion as his walking stick”, he set out on a path of self-annihilation as liberation, and union with the divine. The Sufi poet is regarded as a pioneer of the kafiform of Punjabi poetry, in which he chose to use symbols from the day-to-day life of a weaver, making it most appealing to a wider section of the society. Sanjukta Wagh, Radhika Sood Nayak, Hitesh Dhutiaand Vinayak Netkeare trained in Kathak, Hindustani music, guitar, and tabla, respectively. In this presentation they interpret Shah Hussain’s poetry through music and dance. They explore motifs, metaphors and moods in rarely performed kafis of Shah Hussain.
