An NCPA Presentation

One Truth, Many Paths

Featuring Sourendro, Soumyojit,
Saleem Hasan Chishti & Group
(Approx. 120 mins)

Pain of separation from the Creator is at the core of Sufi lyrics and music. Themes and styles established in Arabic, Persian and Punjabi-Sindhi poetry have had enormous influence on the poetry throughout the Sufi world, and is often an integral part of music included within the Sufi practices like the Indian genre of ghazal and qawwali. While saint-philosophers like Rumi, Lal Dedh, Kabir, Bulle Shah, Amir Khusrau and such others, have fervently expressed the love and longing for the Divine through their poetry, we find similar thoughts also being echoed in works of others like Mir, Ghalib, Nanak, Tukaram, Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and many Bhakti poets across ages in numerous languages. In this event, the artistes will attempt to showcase similarity of thoughts underlying the diverse poetic works set to music. The artistes will perform individual songs as well as juxtapose the conventional Sufi songs with the works of other poets, in a style that has a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary elements. Saleem Chishti belongs to a family of hereditary musicians attached to the Dargah Sharif at Fatehpur Sikri. The monument is dedicated to the legendary Sufi saint Salim Chishti (1478-1572), and as his name suggests, belonged to the Chishti order, which is specially known for the practice of Sama’a – the spiritual crescendo through music. Saurendro and Soumyajit are a duo, known for their collaborative endeavours and eclectic style. Their innovative renditions are especially marked with a cappella section. Some of their projects also have a strong social message.
