Short Film Screenings

An NCPA Presentation in collaboration with White Wall Screenings

Many wonderful short films are being made in India. Filmmakers are at work in their own regions, devising bold, new ways to experiment with form and technique. Short Film Corner hopes to be a showcase for these films and open a dialogue between the filmmakers and their audiences.

Night Queen
Hindi Film with English Subtitles (30 mins)

Forty-eight-year-old Lakshmikant Sharma lives in Old Lucknow with his wife, daughter and widowed mother. He takes the 8:45 metro every day to work and drops his daughter to college on his way. Lakshmi’s life is the textbook definition of monotony. Except it isn’t. Lakshmi wants to wear sarees, put on her favourite shade of pink lipstick and live like a woman. But she cannot. Lakshmi starts consulting a doctor regularly. When she finally musters the courage to come out to the family, all hell breaks loose. Night Queen is a story of repressed desires, grief and complex emotions, but it is also a story of courage, self-love and breaking glass ceilings.

Directed by Noireeta Dasgupta

The Date

Vijay, a traveller and photographer, meets Devi, a sex worker in Mumbai with a vibrant spirit. Drawn to her resilience, he asks her out on a date, eager to connect and take her pictures before his departure. As they wander the city sharing stories over dinner, Devi opens up about her life. Vijay listens compassionately, encouraging her to embrace her true self. Their evening is filled with laughter and a sense of connection creating a bond that transcends their disparate lives and igniting a newfound sense of hope.

Coming Out with the Help of a Time Machine
English Film with English Subtitles (15 mins)

Sid plans to come out to his conservative, community-oriented parents at a local diner. If anything goes wrong, Sid could lose the support of the people who matter to him most. Luckily, he has the power of time travel on his side, and he will do anything to emerge from this encounter unscathed. Coming Out with the Help of a Time Machine adds a heartfelt sci-fi twist to a tale about family dynamics and acceptance.
