An NCPA Presentation in collaboration with White Wall Screenings

Many wonderful short films are being made in India. Filmmakers are at work in their own regions, devising bold, new ways to experiment with form and technique. Short Film Corner hopes to be a showcase for these films and open a dialogue between the filmmakers and their audiences.

Children of the Soil
Hindi with English subtitles ( 5 minutes 30 seconds )

Children of the Soil is a thought-provoking visual comment on events plaguing India’s farmer community, with its associated evils like starvation, debt trap, homelessness, deprivation, begging and urban migration to losing their very farmland that defines them. Sculptures made of soil collected from the barren fields of farmers, are used to document the plight of Indian farmers over centuries, from glory to misery at the iron hand of urban industrialization.

Director: Ranadeep Bhattacharyya and Judhajit Bagchi

When the Sirens Went Still
Marathi with English subtitles ( 16 minutes )

In a village hollowed out by the closure of its textile mill, life has slowed to a state of quiet desperation. With no work and no certainty of the future, survival has taken darker forms. Bhima, a former mill worker, lives on the margins with his wife and an ailing old man, waiting for work that may never return. When a death in the village unsettles its fragile routine, Bhima is drawn into a desperate decision shaped by silence, tradition, and long-held customs. Under the cover of night, he ventures into the cremation ground, where a single act sets off a chain of events that places him in grave danger. Set in a landscape marked by decay, When the Sirens Went Still explores survival, helplessness, and the quiet tragedies faced by those left behind by progress.

Director: Dhiraj Sanghai
