With Janmashtami only a few days away, we present Shyam Rang to celebrate Krishna, “the dark one”, through music. A substantial repertoire of Indian vocal music has poetic content based on the amorous exploits of Krishna, the cowherd of Brindavan. Several compositions are also dedicated to devotional and philosophical thoughts associated with his divine love.
Sawani Shende hails from a musically trained family. She was mentored by her grandmother Kusum Shende, her father Dr. Sanjeev Shende and Dr. Veena Sahasrabuddhe, the well-known exponent of the Gwalior gharana. Besides being recognised for her aesthetic portrayal of raga in the pure classical tradition, she also displays equal skill in presenting semi-classical and light music genres, including some devotional forms. The clarity of diction and the sensitivity in her presentation lend high aesthetic quality to her performance.
This performance will feature various musical forms—from khayal to thumri and bhajan—exploring some common threads as well as distinguishing traits of the artistic creations that convey the outpourings of Krishna’s ardent devotees, Radha, Meera and others.
Box Office now open.
