An NCPA Presentation
Supported by Rukmani & Kishan Daiya Foundation

With Janmashtami just a few days away, we present Shyam Rang to celebrate the legend of Krishna, ‘the dark one’, through music.
Indian vocal music has a substantial repertoire that features poetic content based on the amorous exploits of Krishna, the cowherd of Vrindavan. Several compositions are also dedicated to devotional and philosophical aspects associated with his divine love.

Trained under senior vocalists Chandrakant Apte, Samresh Choudhury, Dilshad Khan and Abdul Rashid Khan, Ronkini Gupta currently trains with Arshad Ali Khan. Besides being recognised for her aesthetic portrayal of raga in pure classical tradition, she displays equal skill in presenting semi-classical and light music genres including devotional forms. Her voice has been well-received through the medium of cinema. Having performed extensively, both in India and overseas, she is a recipient of several awards and accolades such as the coveted Swar Kokila Lata Mangeshkar Award.

Her presentation will feature classical and semi-classical compositions centred around the legend of Krishna. Various musical forms, from thumri to bhajan, will explore some common threads as well as distinguishing traits in the artistic/poetic creations that voice the outpourings of Radha, Krishna’s companion, and Meera, his ardent devotee, among others.
