Music Director Marat Bisengaliev leads this concert featuring the works of Dvořák and Prokofiev.
Winner of multiple international competitions, Armenian cellist Sevak Avanesyanopens the concert with Dvořák’s cello concerto,  one of the greatest and most popular works in the genre. Despite serious reservations as to the suitability of the cello as a solo instrument, Dvořák, inspired by the composer Victor Herbert’s second cello concerto, wrote this piece for his renowned cellist friend Hanus Wihan, while he was living in New York as the Director of the National Conservatory. The concerto, demanding for the solo cellist, is greatly admired for the lyrical writing for the cello and richness of its orchestral music.

The second half of the concert features Sergei Prokofiev’s fifth symphony, written in one month in Soviet Russia during the Second World War in 1944. Prokofiev stated that he intended it as “a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit,” and added: “I cannot say that I deliberately chose this theme. It was born in me and clamoured for expression. The music matured within me. It filled my soul.” The Symphony has a rich vein of melody combined with his distinctively pungent harmonic palette.
