The final concert, conducted by Associate Music Director Zane Dalal, opens with Mozart’s overture to the opera The Abduction from the Seraglio, a story about a Spanish nobleman Belmonte trying to rescue his lover Constanze and servants who were kidnapped by Turkish pirates.

Acclaimed for his highly sensitive touch and technical brilliance, pianist Alexei Volodin will then join the SOI to  perform Rachmaninoff’s third piano concerto, one of the most technically challenging piano concertos in the standard classical repertoire. Hoping to make his work more popular, Rachmaninoff authorised several optional cuts in the score. While these cuts were often taken in earlier performances, it is now commonplace to perform the concerto in its entirety, without any cuts.

The season will close with Igor Stravinsky’s Suite from The Firebird. The Firebird is a ballet written for the 1910 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev’s company, Ballets Russes, and began the collaboration between Diaghilev and Stravinsky that would also produce the acclaimed ballets Petrushka and The Rite of Spring. The story of the ballet is based on the Russian fairy tales of the Firebird and the blessing and curse it possesses for its owner. The premiere was an instant success with both audience and critics, who ecstatically praised the ballet for its perceived ideal symbiosis among design, dance, and music.
